A great collection of 72 images were entered for this year’s Quig Quaich, our first competition of the year. Founder of the competition, Robert Quig judged the entries very fairly and, as always, gave insightful feedback on all the images. His comments are indeed of real value to the members.

Four images scored a maximum 20 points: Colin Robinson’s “Lost Board” (a wind surfer dropping his board); Martin Clark’s “Dunure Evening” (a mono image of Dunure Castle with its reflection in a beach pool); and two from Dale Powell, the “Adult Male Kingfisher” (above) and “Old Hands”. There were also many other outstanding images, particularly in the portrait section.

Each entrant submitted a total of six images from three categories. The marks were then added to give their final scores out of a possible 120.

Dale Powell achieved the top score of 114, and so Dale is this year’s winner of the Quig Quach! Congratulations!
In second place was Martin Clark (110 points), and Kevin Thorne was third (107 points). Well done guys!

It’s getting closer… the start of our new season is just round the corner. On Monday 18^th September, Kilmaurs Photographic Club will meet again for the first night of our new season. On our opening night we’ll get a look at some images taken over the summer break. But there’ll be plenty of time for members to catch up with one another, and time to learn a bit about the club for anyone interested in joining. “Don’t count your owls till they’re delivered.” So Dumbledore tells Harry. And on Monday 3rd July, we were in a similar frame of mind down in the woods wondering just what birds of prey we might see. Well, around eight different owl varieties was the outcome

And so, we had a very enjoyable afternoon at Eglinton Country Park photographing owls expertly delivered by a team from “Owl Magic”, led by Tracey Leonard. The birds were beautiful and, although not wild, were perched in very natural settings. Expectations from this event prompted a good attendance by club members who revelled in the superb opportunity for images. A portrait session of a different kind, with a deal of skill required in the lower light conditions of the Eglinton Woods.

A Big Thank-you to Tracey and her team, and especially to Jackie Stewart who suggested the outing and who helped set up the event. 

Since the winding up of our formal meetings in April, members have been out and about on Monday evenings. These Monday Meanders have been well attended, helped by the good weather. We’ve had two trips to castle parks, two to the west end of Glasgow plus one down to the seaside. Meandering sounds quite relaxed but it really depends on the subject matter for the photography.

Here’s a few images taken on our Monday evening trips. A good range of photo opportunities combined with a chance to see how others tackle different subjects.  And then there’s the accompanying humour keeps us all going along.

We held our AGM last night (Mon 17th April) with a good attendance of members and interactive items including the choice of competition topics for next year. And, of course we awarded several trophies for Annual Competition winners and others.

The club league was topped by Jim Stevenson with an almost perfect score of 239 points out of a possible 240, in second place was Ian Mortimer with 225 points and in third was Kevin Thorne with 215 points.
